inspired by the japan‘s rich tradition of food carving known as mukimono, food carver gaku has mastered the ability of transforming everyday fruit and vegetables into edible masterpieces. armed with an x-acto knife gaku takes a piece of fruit or vegetable from the grocery store and carves into them intricate patterns inspired by traditional japanese motifs.
the patterns are applied to either the skin of flesh of the food, often taking the form flowers, twists, fan shapes or a mixture of both. traditionally they are served as a garnish on the same plate as the meal or on a side plate. of course in oder to combat the rapid oxidisation of each fruit of vegetable, each creation must be made within several minutes.
